RAP RAISIN' ROOTS
A TRIBUTE TO HIP - HOP
Hip - Hop is rapping it's way back to it's roots with a host of talented rapper's and dj's taking part in a Hip - Hop fund raising event in Plymouth UK. A Rap Raisin' Nite will be held at The Three Crowns Inn, Function Suite on the Barbican on Saturday 26th June in aid of The Ethiopia Link Appeal 2004. Beneficiaries Talented rapper ' LIPz aka Petros Carkett http://lipzmusic.cjb.net will host the nite and also perform with his K9s. Also giving it up for the night will be dj Mr Fixxx and dj Madskillz and local, pop idol contender and rythmn & blues diva Melissa. Also appearing will be the K.M.L Breakers. It promises to be an interesting night which we hope will extend into the early hours. Everyone in the world is invited, so come along and enjoy the night.
Hip - Hop in recent years has been very much under the social microscope and regarded as a bad influence to children and young people because of it's involvement with the drug and gangland culture of anti - social behaviour and crime. Very much a reflection of the 1950's when Rock ' N ' Roll horrified and repelled the holy and pure.
It is a modern misconception that Hip - Hop has it's roots from the gang's of the Bronx and that it preaches a lifestyle of drugs, violence and bad attitude. However, Hip - Hop is not, by any means a modern day genre and it's roots extend way back into ancient African history. In it's purest form '' rap '' is a form of expression, a sounding board. Modern day rap was inspired by a Jamaican DJ called ' Kool Herc ' who brought his style of reggae / talk - over to the Bronx in the early seventies.
The history of Hip - Hop is the same as the history of most music, the blues, rock ' n ' roll, rythmn 'n ' blues, in that it, has it's roots in Africa, it was interpreted as anti - social and unacceptable and was thoroughly mis - understood. Personally, and as an ageing rocker the people I have met from the Hip - Hop culture have been some of the politest, most enthusiastic and helpful people I have ever met and thoroughly dedicated to their music and culture. At the end of the day whatever your prefered genre, music is the best communicator in the world and as the saying goes, ' it's not where your from, it's where your at '. Thumbs up for Hip - Hop.
